As the tears of the Goddess flow, four lost temples forebode the coming of the Queen.
Drakengard opening.

The Queen-beast, also known as the Grotesquerie Queen or Mother, is the main antagonist of Drakengard. She is called the Mother Angel in the original Japanese. She is capable of summoning an army of watchers at her behest.

Story

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

the wild dreams of a Deluded child

The world... The world will be swallowed! What is that? What warps the Great Time?
Verdelet
The queen-beast and its children descend from the sky to lay waste to the world. Using its ability to warp the Great Time, it prepared to plunge the world into further chaos, eventually resulting in its end. However, Seere, with the help of Caim and the Red Dragon, was able to freeze it in a timeless zone surrounding the Imperial capital by breaking his pact with Golem, saving the world from its influence.

the End of the dragon sphere

Note: This branch ties into the events of Nier.
What is this? This thing... What can we do?
Red Dragon
In a last-ditch effort to save the world, Caim and the Red Dragon charge at the queen-beast. All three of them are consumed by white light and fall into a chasm that splits time and space, which brings them to the city of Tokyo. There, the queen-beast fights Caim and the Red Dragon in a battle of songs. The monster is eventually overpowered and crumbles to pieces. This branch set into motion the events of NieR.

After the queen-beast's defeat at the hands of Caim and the Red Dragon, her corpse dissolves into "maso", otherworldly particles that caused the White Chlorination Syndrome, whereas the particles of the Red Dragon were used as the basis for the development of magic in NieR's world.

The contraction of WCS causes a pact to be formed between the infected human and the Gods. If the human rejects the pact, they die. Accepting the pact results in them becoming a mindless, violent monster; a Legion.

The Gestalt Project and the development of magical weapons like No. 6 and No. 7 were formed to save humanity from WCS and also to fight the Legions.

Spoilers end here.

Appearance

The queen-beast possesses the form of a grey, naked woman with no hair. Large enough to dwarf buildings, it also has a long, menacing tongue that only appears when it sings. When manipulating time and space, the monster's belly expands to resemble that of a pregnant woman's.

Trivia

  • The Flower's final form after absorbing the power of all six Intoners resembles the queen-beast in appearance. Whether the flower's fully-evolved form has any relation to the queen-beast remains unconfirmed.
  • The queen-beast's death in Ending E strongly resembles Lilith's death scene in The End of Evangelion. This may have been intentional as the branch's title, the End of the dragon sphere, is a direct reference to the anime.[1]
