While the girls and Partition are on their way by sea to the Cathedral City, a kraken-like sea creature attacks the ship and One falls into the water. No one on board the ship is able to help her, but One eventually makes it ashore and dispatches the creature with the aid of her Utautai magic. Turning her back on the seemingly dead creature, One is tripped by one of its long tentacles, proving that it is far from dead. Luckily, though, a black dragon appears just in time to save her by crushing the creature's head.
The rest of the chapter depicts the first appearance of Bartas and the Faerie and the beginning of One's epic, solo battle with them.
